Golf courses in Tasmania Australia: 5 courses worth playing

Tasmania has become one of Australia’s most attractive golf destinations, particularly for players who enjoy links golf and dramatic coastal landscapes. From world-ranked courses on King Island to historic layouts and newer courses near Hobart, there are plenty of golf courses in Tasmania, Australia worth adding to a golf trip.

Note: The information about the golf courses below was last updated on September 16, 2026.

1. Cape Wickham Golf Links

Cape Wickham Golf Links on King Island is one of the main reasons Tasmania has gained international attention as a golf destination. The course sits beneath the Cape Wickham Lighthouse on the northern tip of King Island, with the Bass Strait forming the backdrop for much of the round.

Designed by Mike DeVries and Darius Oliver, the course opened in 2015 and makes extensive use of the island’s natural coastal terrain. Several holes run close to the water, creating a mix of dramatic views and demanding shot choices. The finishing holes are particularly memorable, with the 18th playing along Victoria Cove.

Cape Wickham is currently ranked among Australia’s leading public-access courses. The 2026 GOLF Course Guide placed it at No. 1 among Australian public-access courses, while Golf Australia Magazine ranked it No. 2 overall in Australia.

The experience extends beyond the course. Visitors can stay in onsite villa-style accommodation, while the clubhouse provides dining focused on local produce. Equipment hire is also available.

Good for: Golfers looking for a bucket-list links experience and dramatic coastal scenery.

2. Ocean Dunes Golf Course

Ocean Dunes is another standout course on King Island. Located on the island’s rugged west coast, the course was designed by Graeme Grant and covers approximately 115 hectares of coastal terrain.

The layout combines rolling dunes with the Southern Ocean, creating a raw and exposed golfing environment. Two par-3 holes play directly across the ocean, while other holes move between coastal and slightly inland sections of the property.

Ocean Dunes is particularly interesting for golfers who prefer natural links conditions rather than highly manicured parkland courses. Wind, firm surfaces and uneven coastal terrain can all influence club selection and shot strategy.

The course is open to visiting golfers and has a Pro Shop. King Island accommodation and travel arrangements can also be organised as part of a wider golf trip. The course is only around five minutes from King Island Airport, although reaching the island still requires some planning.

Good for: Golfers who want a remote, rugged and authentic links experience.

3. Royal Hobart Golf Club

For golfers staying in Hobart, Royal Hobart Golf Club is one of the most convenient high-quality options. The club is located at Seven Mile Beach, around 20 minutes from Hobart and only about five minutes from Hobart Airport.

The 18-hole course was originally designed by Vern Morcom and makes strong use of the area’s natural sandy terrain. More than 80 fairway and greenside bunkers form a major part of the layout, creating a strategic challenge for golfers who need to manage their approach shots carefully.

Royal Hobart also has strong practice facilities, including a large putting green, chipping area, two practice fairways and a 150-metre practice hole with bunkers. Visitors are welcome, although tee-time arrangements should be made directly with the club.

The clubhouse provides food and beverage services, while the Pro Shop offers golfing equipment and support.

Good for: Golfers staying around Hobart who want a full-length championship course.

4. Tasmania Golf Club

Tasmania Golf Club is located in Cambridge, close to Hobart Airport and the eastern side of Hobart. Its position on headlands overlooking Barilla Bay gives the course a scenic coastal character without requiring a trip to King Island or Tasmania’s north-east coast.

The club’s 18-hole championship course measures 6,214 metres and has a par of 72 for men. Its location, natural elevation changes and views across the bay make it an appealing option for golfers looking for a scenic round near Hobart.

Although Tasmania Golf Club is a private members’ club, it welcomes visitors throughout the year. Visitors can play socially without a handicap or participate in competitions if they hold a current handicap. Club hire, motorised carts and pull buggies are also available.

The clubhouse adds restaurant and bar facilities, while the club also offers a Pro Shop, lessons and golf clinics.

5. Ratho Farm

Ratho Farm near Bothwell offers a very different experience from Tasmania’s famous coastal links courses. The property is widely regarded as Australia’s oldest surviving golf course, with its origins dating back to the 1830s.

Instead of dramatic ocean views, Ratho Farm provides a quieter inland setting in Tasmania’s Central Highlands. The historic character of the property is part of its appeal, making it an interesting choice for golfers who want to combine golf with Australian sporting history.

The property also offers accommodation in former convict barns and stables, as well as a traditional highland homestead. This makes Ratho Farm particularly suitable for golfers who want a slower trip rather than a course-focused resort holiday.

The course itself is much less polished than Tasmania’s premium links destinations, and that is precisely the point. It offers a chance to experience golf in a setting that feels connected to the game’s early history in Australia.

Good for: Golfers interested in history, heritage and a more relaxed golf experience.
