Toowoomba Golf Club (Middle Ridge)

Toowoomba Golf Club has the longest history in the city. Founded in 1896, it is the second-oldest golf club in Queensland after Townsville. The club moved several times before settling at Middle Ridge in 1926. Fred Popplewell, the 1925 Australian Open champion, helped design that layout. Today the course plays as a par 72 of about 5,950m, set 700m above sea level on the Great Dividing Range.

Trees shape most of the round. Golf Australia counted about 11,500 on the property, including 8,000 gums. On the dogleg 4th and 5th holes, a high drive can catch branches that hang over the fairway. The 7th is a downhill par 3 over a lake. The short par-5 17th then plays uphill to a two-tier green with out of bounds behind it. Golf Australia ranked the course 99th in its Top-100 Public Access list for 2023, citing kikuyu fairways and Penncross bentgrass greens in very good condition.

The layout is still changing. A rebuilt 9th hole and new bunkers on the 3rd, 10th and 13th were completed in recent years. In late 2025, Inside Golf reported that the 8th and 12th were under construction, with two temporary holes in play. Because of this work, check the “Conditions of Play” banner on the club’s homepage before you drive out. It is updated daily and shows whether the course is open.

The club does not publish visitor green fees online. Golf Australia listed $50 for 18 holes, seven days a week, in its 2023 review. Social tee times can be booked through the club’s online public booking system or by calling the Pro Shop. After the round, the bistro and deck overlook the course.

Key information:

Address: 235-323 Rowbotham St, Middle Ridge QLD 4350, Australia

Opening hours: Clubhouse 9am-6pm Monday and Thursday, 9am-7pm Tuesday, 9am-9pm Wednesday and Friday, 8am-7pm Saturday and Sunday

Hotline: +61 7 4600 9397 (Pro Shop)

Website: toowoombagolfclub.com.au

Rating on Google Maps: 4.4/5

Check local rules: Here

Tree-lined fairways and bentgrass greens at Toowoomba Golf Club on the Middle Ridge escarpment – Source: toowoombagolfclub.com.au

2. City Golf Club Toowoomba

City Golf Club Toowoomba is the city’s tournament venue. The club has hosted the Queensland PGA Championship for many years. In October 2026 it also staged the Australian Senior Open, the only national open held in regional Australia. The club has signed on to host the event again in 2027 and 2028.

The course plays in two distinct halves. The front nine is relatively flat. The back nine climbs into the hills, with large elevation changes and greens that are harder to read. Swales around the greens add to the challenge. The round ends on the 18th, a 406m par 4 rated the hardest hole on the course. Its green was recently redesigned, and a new deck for up to 120 people now overlooks it.

Off the course, City Golf Club operates more like a full entertainment venue. It has a bistro, an Asian kitchen, cafes, bars, a gaming lounge, a mini golf course and Tabatinga, an indoor play centre for children. The 4.5-star City Golf Club Motel sits beside the course and offers stay-and-play packages. This range of facilities likely explains why its Google Maps listing has more than 1,500 reviews.

Visitor green fees are $70 for 18 holes and $40 for nine. Full-time students pay $35 and $25 with ID. Motorised buggy hire costs $50 for 18 holes or $30 for nine, and hire clubs cost $25 per set. The club recommends Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for social play. Wednesday and Sunday competitions require an official Golf Australia handicap.

Key information:

Address: 254 South St, Toowoomba QLD 4350, Australia

Opening hours: Open seven days; tee times listed on the online booking sheet, Halfway House open until 3pm

Hotline: +61 7 4636 9000

Website: citygolf.com.au

Rating on Google Maps: 4.2/5

The redesigned 18th green and clubhouse deck at City Golf Club Toowoomba, host of the Australian Senior Open – Source: citygolf.com.au

3. It is located inside Borneo Barracks, an Australian Army base. Non-members must show photo ID at the base entrance. The club has welcomed visitors for more than 50 years and now has over 300 members.

The layout is unusual. It uses 10 greens and 18 tee blocks to create a par 71 of 5,886m. Playing the same greens from different tees changes the angle and length of each approach. According to club president Bob Foot, some fairways look wide from the tee, but a drive on the wrong side can block your second shot. The fairways are easy to walk, and the bentgrass greens have a strong local reputation.

Facilities suit a relaxed country round. PGA professional Grant Harriman runs the Pro Shop from Wednesday to Sunday and offers lessons for men, women and juniors. The clubhouse has a bar and serves hot food such as burgers and pies. Club competitions run on Tuesdays (women), Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Social golfers can play seven days a week.

Inside Golf reported social green fees of $30 for 18 holes and $20 for nine in September 2025. This makes Cabarlah one of the lower-cost options near Toowoomba. Golf carts are available for hire, but it is best to book ahead since the Pro Shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Key information:

Address: 10046 New England Highway, Cabarlah QLD 4352, Australia

Opening hours: Social play seven days; Pro Shop open Wednesday to Sunday

Hotline: +61 7 4696 6396

Website: cabarlahgolfcourse.com.au

Rating on Google Maps: 4.3/5

Bentgrass greens and open fairways at Cabarlah Golf Course inside Borneo Barracks north of Toowoomba – Source: cabarlahgolfcourse.com.au

4. Eustondale Golf Course

Eustondale Golf Course offers a shorter, less formal option on the western edge of the city. It sits in Glenvale, about five kilometres from the Toowoomba CBD. The nine-hole course plays as a par 33 of about 1,859m. That length makes it suitable for beginners, juniors and players short on time.

The course changed hands in 2026, and recent reviews reflect the shift. Its overall Google rating of 3.6/5 includes many older complaints from the previous owner. Reviews from mid-2026 describe friendly staff and improved course condition. One reviewer noted that some fairways still needed work but called the price good value.

Eustondale also has a driving range, which makes it a practical place to warm up or practise before a round at a longer course. Southern Queensland Country, the regional tourism body, notes that the course offers lessons and equipment hire. It also says social players do not need a booking.

The course has no official website, so prices are not published.
