Local Rules
Ground Under Repair
Main greens, grass tees and unused temporary greens are GUR; play is prohibited and relief is mandatory.
Out of Bounds
Beyond the line of white stakes is OOB; the road is not OOB from the 3rd and 12th tees, and balls in surrounding fields must not be recovered.
Temporary Greens and Wrong Greens
A ball on an unused temporary green or a green/fringe not belonging to the hole must be treated as on the wrong putting green and relief is mandatory.
Protection of Young Trees
Relief is mandatory when a staked tree or tree protected by wire netting interferes with stance or intended swing.
Tractor Marks, Drains and Paths
Relief may be obtained for tractor tyre marks, stone-filled drains, artificial paths, or interference with stance/swing.
Manholes, Winter Tee Frames and Wooden Steps
Relief may be obtained from manhole covers, winter tee frames and wooden steps. The Local Rules 2 and 3 breach penalty is specified.

Course Character
Its defining character is the terrain: almost every fairway and green has a distinct slope, while gorse, scrub and exposed common-land surroundings frame a traditional North Devon golfing experience. The layout uses different tee positions for the second nine, so club selection and lie awareness matter. Great Torrington is a compact 9-hole heathland/parkland course routed over a pleasantly sloping site on Torrington Commons, with tightly mown heathland turf, gorse, challenging green complexes and views across the Torridge valley. Major Risks
Sloping ground Distinct slopes across fairways and greens make stance and approach control difficult. Gorse and scrub Natural vegetation frames the course and penalises poor positioning. Common-land paths Walkers have priority and golfers must not play when walkers are in range.
